Flower Teahouse -General Information

A Tea Ceremony Experience is one of the best ways to first experience a tea ceremony in Japan. Although shorter than a typical gathering, during your time with us you’ll enjoy an authentic performance and master the basics in preparing your own matcha.

For those who would like to dress in kimono for their ceremony, we have a kimono studio attached to the teahouse with a dedicated team. Reservations for kimono rental can be made at the same time as booking your tea ceremony.

Flower Teahouse is located at the end of a private alleyway in a residential zone. To maintain the privacy of our neighbours (and control the flow of people) our team will check that you have a reservation when you enter the alley.

From April Kyoto began to restrict access to certain streets in the Gion area to tourists. We are not affected by these changes, but we need to try as much as possible to make sure our neighbours are not bothered by our business.

  • The price of the experience includes a tea ceremony performance, a traditional tea sweet, and the opportunity to make your own bowl of matcha.

  • It is ok take photos throughout the shared tea ceremony experience, but please turn off the flash and respect the privacy of other guests. No videos please.

  • Tea ceremonies at Camellia are performed in English.

  • If you intend to bring a translator we ask that you book a private tea ceremony. Translators and guides can join private tea ceremonies free of charge.

  • If you have any language requests or concerns, do not hesitate to get in touch.

Notes for Parents

  • Like strong coffee, matcha has a high caffeine content, so please be careful.

  • Small children are more than welcome at Camellia, but we do ask a small favour during the actual tea ceremony.

The tea ceremony performance (the main focus of the session) lasts from 10-15 minutes and is performed in silence. So that everyone can enjoy the peace of this moment we ask that parents take any crying or fidgeting children down to the waiting room before re-joining the group once the performance part is complete.

We very much appreciate your understanding, and on the day our team will be able to assist you if you need any extra help.

Should Guests Reserve in Advance?

  • We recommend you make a reservation or call in advance, especially during popular seasons (it is especially busy during cherry blossom season and for autumn colours) or if you are a big group.

  • If you happen to be close to our teahouse, but don’t have a booking, please feel free to check availability with our staff.
